Updated on: Friday, April 10, 2009

The choice based credit system (CBCS) will become fully effective from the next academic year i.e. 2009-10, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said here on Saturday.

Though the system was introduced all over the State from the current academic year, there were practical problems in its implementation, which had been brought to the government’s notice by vice-chancellors of various universities.

Following this, the Minister convened a meeting of vice-chancellors here. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Mr. Ponmudy said the problems would be resolved, and the system fully effective from the next academic year.

The had been effectively implemented in Bharathidasan and Bharathiar Universities. Under the CBCS, there would be uniform syllabus for core subjects in all universities. This would enable students to migrate from one university to another in the State.

The universities would have the option to have their own syllabus for elective subjects. for the benefit of students, cluster of colleges would be formed in each district so that students could take advantage of the choice of electives provided at a neighbouring college.

At present, pure science or arts subjects were not of students’ choice as job opportunities were limited.

To attract the students, technical subjects would be taught as electives along with core arts and science subjects. A high-level committee had already been formed to monitor the progress of implementation of the choice based credit system.

Mr.Ponmudy also said the government was planning to train uneducated workers, who would be given training in their field in nearby polytechnic or industrial training institute.

They could write examinations to be conducted by the Open University, which would issue certificates to successful candidates.

The Minister also said that the new code of procedures for conducting graduation ceremony and convocation ceremony would come into effect immediately.
