EU selects Manipal varsity as study centre

Manipal: The delegation of European Union to India, Bhutan and Nepal has selected Manipal University as one of its study centres in India.


Although EU has several centres in the country, Manipal University will have the first centre in the private sector.


The Manipal Centre for European Studies will be inaugurated on December 17, 2009, by the head of economic cooperation section delegation of the European Union to India, Fernando Nino Paje.


CEO, Philips Innovation Campus, Bangalore, Alexius Collette will be the guest of honour and pro-chancellor of Manipal University, H S Ballal will preside over the function.


Briefing reporters about the project, registrar international programmes of Manipal University, H Vinod Bhat, said that the project will be funded by EU to the tune of about Rs 2 crore, for a period of two years. After which, the University will run the projects on its own steam.


It was around February-March this year that proposals to set up three more study centres in the country came up. Manipal University submitted a proposal in July and it was accepted, Vinod Bhat said. It became a reality with the signing of the contract with the delegation in October.


Referring to the objectives of the Centre, the registrar international programmes said: "It is aimed at developing and broadening the Indo-EU relations by sharing each others strength with the help of educational enterprise and to foster institutional partnerships between universities."


The existing partnership with Hochschule Bremen University of applied sciences, Bremen, Germany was extended to include the programmes suggested in the Centre as well. T A Pai Management Institute has signed as an Associate in the execution of one of the programmes of MCES.


The Manipal Centre for European Studies has planned three programmes and two centres as a part of this initiative.
