Disabled were not recruited by Employment Exchange

Updated on: Friday, April 10, 2009

The special division of the Directorate of Employment and Training has not aided the recruitment of a single disabled candidate since October 2007 as per the records.

The Special Employment Exchange, a unit dedicated to provide employment services and guidance to the disabled in the State, has not generated any employment in nearly two years.

D M Naidu, an activist for disability rights said,'The Special Employment Exchange for the disabled is non-operational all over the country. There are no intimations when jobs are available and nobody is even aware of these exchanges.'

The number of disabled candidates waiting for jobs is over 250 persons have registered themselves at the exchange in both 2007 and 2008.

Several candidates who have registered since 1995 are yet to receive even interview calls. Sources at the Exchange claimed that there were at least three or four candidates received jobs through the Exchange over the past couple of years, but records of these were unavailable.

Even no private organisations have come forward to help disabled .In the past HAL, BEL, the Indian Air Force and a few State government organisations had hired a few candidates through the Exchange but even those have stopped now.

An Assocham report on the 968 employment exchanges in the country revealed that these government run units had failed  to generate jobs even during the boom in the job market

The report also suggested that the exchanges be shut down after a cost-benefit analysis revealed that each job placement cost over Rs 80,000 to the Government.
