NSS volunteers urged to serve in villages; stress on rain harvesting

The NSS units of Sankara College of Science and Commerce celebrated NSS day. A. Mohana Sundram, Head, Department of Commerce, Sree Narayana Guru College, pointed out the importance of being an NSS volunteer and urged the students to serve in the villages. He stressed the importance of planting trees and rain harvesting.

The Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management, Sri Krishna Arts and Science College, organised a seminar on food processing. Chef Vijayakumar, Executive Chef, Radisson GRT Hotel, Chennai, inaugurated the seminar and spoke on the present and future trends in the hospitality industry. Other resource persons from the industry also gave inputs regarding the hospitality industry.

The Department of Computer Applications of Coimbatore Institute of Management and Technology conducted a seminar on ethical hacking. Ankit Fadia, ethical hacker, spoke to the students and created awareness among them about the use of the Internet and hacking.

A students' association was launched and free laptops were distributed to the new batch of SNT Global Academy of Management Studies and Technology. C. Rajendiran, Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax, Coimbatore, gave away the laptops. He urged the management graduates to become enterprising leaders. He also exhorted them to imbibe the values enshrined in the Thirukkural to excel in their life.

Students of the Department of Social Work of Bharathiar University in collaboration with the Kovai Diabetes Centre organised a diabetes detection camp at the Kurumbapalayam High School, Madukkarai. Villagers from the Kurumbapalayam village were tested for diabetes and blood pressure and were given the relevant advice regarding treatment and diet.

Avinashilingam University for Women observed the National Nutrition Week in collaboration with the Nutrition Association of the university. Various events were held throughout the week to emphasise the relationship between good health and nutrition. In addition to sessions and lectures there was a talk by K. Bharathan, Lead Auditor, Bureau Veritas (India) Private Limited on Food Safety Management ISO 22000.

The GRD School of Information Technology and Science of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a workshop on MatLab – A Tool for Research. Sanjeev Kubakaddi, Director and Promoter, Milan Infotech, Bangalore, was the chief guest. He spoke on the MatLab software and how it could be used as a platform for different verticals like automobile engineering, aerospace, neural networks, simulation engineering, etc.

The Business School of SNS College of Technology launched a bi-annual journal “SNS Journal of Finance”. M.S. Govindaraj, General Manager, Reliance Industries Limited, Coimbatore, released the journal. D. Rajkumar, Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Coimbatore, was the guest of honour. Faculty and students from the various B-schools took part in the event.

The Association of Bioscience of SNMV College of Arts and Science was launched. N. Dharmaraj, Reader, Department of Chemistry, Bharathiar University, was the chief guest. He addressed the students on bio-nano materials and carbon nano tubes. He pointed out the various applications and scope of nanoparticles in science.

KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology and KPR School of Business were launched recently at Arasur. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor, VIT University, Vellore, inaugurated the institute and touched upon the discrepancy in education in India and the United States. S.V. Balasubramaniam, Chairman, Bannari Amman Group of Industries, inaugurated the business school.

The NSS units of Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Maha Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science in association with the Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research conducted a rally to create awareness on breast cancer. More than 250 NSS volunteers took part in the rally that went around the neighbouring villages of the college. Volunteers distributed pamphlets regarding details of breast cancer.

Nehru Arts and Science College celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi by planting saplings on the college campus. R. Ganeshan, Additional Principal Conservator, Tamil Nadu Forest Department, was the chief guest for the occasion. A pledge on non-violence and peace and an oath on cleanliness were administered.

The Department of Costume Design and Fashion of Hindusthan College of Arts and Science organised an exhibition cum sale “Shrishti”, a fashion expo. Viking A.C. Eswaran, President of SIHMA, Tirupur, inaugurated the sale. A wide range of fashion sketches, embroidery works, garments designed by students were displayed. A share of the profits derived from the sale was donated to the children of Anbu Illam.
