Shocked students flock to CU

Kolkata: Students who have failed their Part 2 at Calcutta University (CU) may be allowed to sit for their Part 3 exams in March 2010.

Over 200 undergraduate students gathered on CU’s main campus on November 29. The students, shocked at the sharp decline in pass rates, said there were anomalies in their marksheets.

The students submitted a memorandum to CU authorities and said that they had already completed their syllabus. They demanded that they be allowed to sit for a supplementary exam or be allowed to take the Part three exams.

VC Suranjan Das gave the students a patient hearing and said CU did not want students with students with genuine anomalies to suffer.

The Undergraduate Council meets on December 14 where the matter will be discussed.

The dip in results come at a bad time for CU. Government rating agency NAAC was supposed to visit CU in the middle of the month. The poor results in Part 1 and 2 will not help the university.

Problems this year include:
-          failure of the university to provide marks for the biochemistry practical paper
-          Certain students who received qualified status have scored less than those who have been assessed as partly qualified

Students from several colleges such as Ashutosh College, Charuchandra College and Surendranath College demanded a supplementary examination. They congregated on CU’s main campus and vandalised the VC and pro-VC’s car.

Police had to remove the students from campus.
