CU marks dip

Updated on: Friday, November 27, 2009

Kolkata: Marks fell for the second consecutive year as Calcutta University’s Part 1 and Part II results were declared for BA and BSc.

Authorities expressed concern and students, dismay, at the results declared yesterday.

Calcutta University’s vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said that the authorities were seriously concerned at the trend and an investigation would be carried out.

The university introduced the 1+1+1 system three years ago with the aim of improving student performance.

This has not been the case. Around 10,000 students sat for the exam this year.

There was a two to three per cent decrease in pass percentages in 2008 over the previous year. The only exception is for BSc Part I honours students.

It may be possible that there needs to be more lectures slotted for each subject as the present number is not enough to complete the syllabus. Students felt that the syllabus for the second and third years was too long.

Some teachers believe that students do not perform well as results take too long to be published. Second and third year classes begin before the Puja holidays and students do not focus as results are not out then.

A committee will be formed to investigate the reasons behind the decrease in marks.
