Admission to new medical college to beging next year

Puducherry: Health minister E Valsaraj has said the first batch of students to the state run medical college would be admittted during the next academic year.

Talking to reporters after visiting the ongoing works of the medical college yesterday, he said the college would have a 300 bed hospital and two hostels and total investment would be Rs 260 crores.

'We have brought down the investment from earlier estimate of Rs 850 crores to Rs 260 crores,' he said adding the faculty and other staff for the college would be appointed soon.  Puducherry now has a medical college -JIPMER- funded and  administered by the Centre through an Act of Parliament.

Foundation for the college named as 'Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Medical College and Research Institute' was laid three years ago when N Rangasamy was the Chief Minister.
