Chennai: The university grants commission has warned the private universities against affiliating colleges and starting off campus centres.

A circular from UGC warns that some private universities have affiliated colleges and started campuses in violation of UGC regulations. 'This is also against the judgment in the case of Prof Yash Pal and others against the state of Chhatisgarh,' the circular added.

It has been brought to the notice of UGC that some of the universities across the country were running centers on franchising basis, which was not allowed. The circular also appealed to the public to report the matter to secretary of UGC on finding any violation of the above provisions.

The UGC said that the private varsities should get approval of joint committee comprising UGC, All India council for technical education (AICTE) and distance education council (DEC) and the approval letter should be signed by secretary of UGC, member-secretary of AICTE and director of DEC for conducting distance education courses.
