Benefits of Raja Yoga highlighted

KG College of Arts and Science conducted a Raja Yoga function. Brother Bramahakumari Kalidass in his keynote address explained about the power of mind and how one can strengthen it by undergoing the Raja Yoga regularly. Sister Bramahakumari Anupama shared her experiences in Raja Yoga with the gathering. Faculty members and students attended the programme.

Microsoft Corporation, India launched the Microsoft IT Academy and Centre of Excellence at Karunya University. Dheeraj Prasad, Director - Education, Microsoft Corporation, India, launched the centre in the presence of Paul Dhinakaran, Chancellor, Karunya University. The centre would facilitate free e-learning of Microsoft certified courses, distribution of Microsoft software, student outreach programmes, faculty development programmes, etc.

Students of GRG School of Management Studies observed the “Joy of Giving Week”. Students visited a home for the mentally and physically disabled individuals and conducted various events for them.

Students also volunteered their time and skills for the kids at a children's home and involved them in activities like craftwork sessions, painting contests, lessons on hygiene and good manners.

The girls were taught embroidery, while the boys were involved in a ko kho game and a running race.

The School of Biosciences of Dr. G.R.D Damodaran College of Science organised a seminar on the “Role of Siddha and Ayurveda Medicines in Geriatric Care”. The chief guest K. Manikavasagam, Director, National Institute of Siddha, Chennai, spoke on the importance of the Siddha system of medicine in the treatment of ailments related with aging. Over 350 delegates participated from various states and a total of 46 research articles were presented at the programme. The compendium of 78 abstracts was released as a book. An exhibition of Siddha and herbal products was also organised.

The Department of Computer Applications of Hindusthan College of Arts and Science conducted a technical symposium ‘Clusters'.

The Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, Sivanandi, inaugurated the symposium and released the magazine Clusters '09.

Ravi Dhandapani, Managing Director, Majestic People Info Tech, delivered the special address. Various events like paper presentation, quiz, etc., formed part of the symposium.

The Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management of PSG College of Arts and Science celebrated Ayudha Pooja and Saraswathi Pooja in the campus. Students joined in the celebration and set up Navarathri Kolu. They also prepared various snacks pertaining to the occasion. It was served to the faculty and students. The exercise was organised to enhance the skill among students in the art of bulk cooking.

The Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneur Development of Bharathiar University conducted an orientation programme on Young India Network in association with Young Indians. D. Purushothaman, Students' Chair of Young Indians, conducted the orientation. He said the Young Indians engaged 3,000 students across the nation in competitions and case studies on solutions to global warming. He also focused on the involvement in education, health care and entrepreneurship activities.

The Department of Commerce of Sri Krishna Arts and Science observed the International Ozone Day.

It organised a conclave on S2 - Source and Society. Soundararaju, General Manager, Eltex Super Castings, who was the chief guest, spoke on the topic with special focus on energy conservation activities. Students made presentations on various topics pertaining to energy conservation, afforestation, global warming, solar energy, etc.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of VLB Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology conducted ‘Spark 2009', a national symposium. S.K. Najmul Hussain, Management Advisor, Lakshmi Machine Works, and Parthiban Ramswamy, Managing Director, Sharp Group of Companies, spoke on the importance of innovation in the growth of a company. Students made presentation and also exhibited various fabricated exhibits.

The Management Association of Sankara Institute of Management Science was inaugurated recently. M. Krishna, Managing Director, Dresser Valve India Private Limited, inaugurated the association and spoke on the changes in the global business environment which were happening very rapidly.

The response time to the change was very limited, he said. Special lectures on Strategies of MNCs in Developing Countries by the chief guest formed part of the inaugural function.

A women's cell was inaugurated at Sree Narayana Guru College recently. Lawyer Surya Prabha inaugurated the cell and spoke on the rights of women. She touched upon topics like marital rights, causes relating to women being suppressed and how women should use freedom in the right manner so as to be careful not to fall in the grip of antisocial elements.

The Department of Management Studies of PPG Institute of Management was inaugurated recently. S. Karthikeyan, representative, Coimbatore Capital Limited, inaugurated the department activities. He urged the students to keep innovating. Innovation was a continuous process. To aim for corporate readiness it was essential for students to keep innovating, he said.

The Placement Cell of Avinashilingam University for Women organised a programme on Career Awareness in Civil Services. P. Muthusamy, Additional Commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax, addressed the final year undergraduate students. He spoke on the various stages of preparation, examinations, selection procedures, etc. He stressed on the importance of goal setting, working towards it with dedication and achieving it.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Info Institute of Engineering conducted a lecture on “Network and Networking Security”.

K. Elankodi, Associate Project Manager, Cognizant Technologies, spoke on the need for network fundamentals, types of network, topologic, OSI models, firewalls and intrusion detection systems. Certification courses on networking were also discussed.

The Department of Commerce of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women conducted a seminar on “Changing Paradigms in Indian Tourism: Implication for Growth and Sustainability”. S. Rajamohan, Principal, Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Taramani, Chennai, spoke on the topic of tourism and development. He touched upon the importance of tourism in economic growth.

The Department of Computer Science of Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science conducted a seminar on Boom in Entertainment Industry. D. David, Director, G9 School of Multimedia, spoke on the topic.

He enlightened the students on the new software in multimedia and urged them to take up a career in creative animation. He urged the students to develop creative skills in addition to their subject knowledge.

The School of Biotechnology of SNMV College of Arts and Science organised a science exhibition on Cryptic - Bionanoexpo '09. Research scholars and second year biotechnology students of the college exhibited various exhibits pertaining to nanotechnology, synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles, sol gel technology, applications of nanoparticles in medicine. DNA fingerprinting, etc. The occasion was also to welcome the first year biotechnology students.

The Voices of Women, the women's wing of CSI Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science organised a workshop on equipping adolescents towards responsible citizenship. Vinoo Aram, Director, Shanti Ashram, Dr. Mahadevan, Professor, Coimbatore Medical College, and staff from the Social Work Department, addressed the participants.
