Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission accepted KIIT law school’s recommendation on transgenders. Eunuchs and transgenders now have the right to tick the “others” category in the gender box.
Dr A Samanta, founder of KIIT & KISS has expressed his happiness on this major achievement of the KIIT Law School.
Three students from KIIT raised the issue of including transgenders and eunuchs during an interactive session with Navin B Chawla, chief election commissioner of India in January.
Second-year law students Prerna Dhoop, Kanad Bagchi and Alimpan Chatterjee argued for the inclusion saying that nothing was closer to the "heart of liberty" and "central to personal dignity" than an individual's chosen gender identity.
Chawla assured the gathering present that he would look into the matter.
The three students met with Chawla at his office in New Delhi to reiterate their views.
The Electoral Commission recognised the efforts of the students and Chawla on November 12 when it ascribed the “other” category for eunuchs and transsexuals.
