We have to focus on skills, knowledge: UP Governor

Lucknow:  Uttar Pradesh Governor BL Joshi today stressed on making optimum use of large population of the country by coming out with development strategy to focus on providing quality education and better health cover.

'We have to focus on skills and knowledge to be developed in the areas, where the market forces require those skills,' the Governor said while speaking at a function here.

Terming large population as the biggest asset, he said that educationists, technical experts, economists and government have jointly to play a crucial role in harnessing this resource and divert it towards nation building.

The Governor, who was speaking at a convention organised by Lucknow Management Association said that quality education can be made accessible to poor by reducing direct and indirect costs.'Higher education should be oriented to the needs of the economy', he said.

Citing the National Knowledge Commission, he said that the number of universities in India is low. Japan with a population of around 13 crore have 726 universities, while US with 27 crore population has nearly 2470 universities, he said adding that recommendation of National Knowledge Commission is laudable and concerted move towards its implementation would send positive signal for higher education in the country.

The Uttar Pradesh Governor said that investment in education will surely change the destiny of our nation. Dr Narendra Jadhav, Member Planning commission while stressing on useful and relevant education said that the level of literacy is still not very encouraging.

'We need to increase the accessibility of higher education with improved quality. Even teachers should keep abreast about recent advances of their subject,' he said adding that proper training of student is needed after completing education before being functional. Jadhav said that major reforms in education sector are needed.
