DU against assessment by NAAC

Updated on: Wednesday, November 11, 2009

New Delhi: The UGC's instruction to DU to get assessed by NAAC has been rejected by the institutions which said there was no need for such a measure.

The Academic Council, the apex decision-making body of the university, yesterday decided in a meeting not to allow National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to assess and accredit its institutions.

At the meeting, it was felt that the university has a mechanism to achieve the objectives of NAAC. The council decided that the university will create its own Internal Quality Assurance Cell for assessment. The Vice Chancellor will form a committee to chalk out the modalities.

Earlier, the UGC had asked the university to comply with NAAC decisions. The NAAC is meant for giving accreditation to institution created in the last 50 years, an AC member said. DU was set up in 1920s.

The council also decided that professors A L Nagar, Upendra Baxi, Indira Goswami and A N Moitra be conferred the status of Emeritus Professor.  The Academic Council proposed that Deshbandhu College  (Evening), which is going to be a day college shortly, should be renamed to 'Ramanujan College.
