Thanjavur: Our education system throughout the country must posses an indispensable component of studies 'Social engineering', said Ashok Vardhan Shetty, Principal Secretary, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.

Addressing the annual day function at Periyar Maniammai University, Mr. Shetty said that the lack in our engineering students is that they don't know about humanities and social issues.

'It is not their fault. But the fault of our engineering education system,' Mr. Shetty said and urged the university authorities to make social engineering a component of studies.

The other problem in our education system is that it doesn't support original thinking.  Without memorizing notes for the examinations our children should be trained to think originally, Mr. Shetty said. It is high time that the entire system of education goes through radical throughout the country change to bring out the latent thinking and approach everything with a scientific touch.

Describing Periyar EVR as a great social reformer and an original thinker, Mr. Shetty said that the students could emulate from the life of the great leader.

He asked the girl students of the university to develop scientific temper and bring up their children shorn of superstitions and blind beliefs. Scientific temper is looking for evidence before believing any proposition.

He distributed certificates to persons trained by the university under a rural development department programme.
