MGU to set up UCIC for internationalisation of higher education in the university system

Updated on: Friday, November 06, 2009

Kottayam: Mahatma Gandhi University will set up University Centre for International Cooperation (UCIC), the first of its kind among universities in the State.

The centre is being established to facilitate the positive aspects of the process of internationalisation of higher education in the university system.

The centre will strive to identify and address the issues and concerns in the realm of higher education triggered by the GATT agreement and the WTO, resulting in rapid privatisation and commercialisation of the sector, which is also fuelled by the entry of private as well as foreign universities into India.

The UCIC will facilitate collaborative teaching and research between the academic departments of the university with institutions of repute across the globe and promote mutually beneficial exchange of students, research scholars and teachers.

Institutional membership in international academic bodies, credit recognition and transfer, short-term academic modules for visiting foreign students and financial support to students of the Mahatma Gandhi University to pursue study abroad with the support of various national and international agencies are among the objectives of the centre.
