SLET gets negative marking

Updated on: Tuesday, October 27, 2009

University Grants Commission (UGC) will introduce negative marking in the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) from 2010.

SLET received affiliation from UGC and is used to recruit lecturers in colleges.

It is believed that UGC wants SLET to follow the same pattern as the National Eligibility Test (NET). Guidelines for negative marking are yet to be finalised.

The move is expected to increase the difficulty of the exam which has a pass rate of 2.5 per cent out of the 12,000 students that take the exam each year. Only 1.5 per cent of students pass NET.

Authorities said that negative marking will force students to take the exam more seriously.

SLET is divided into three papers. The first two papers have objective-styled questions while the third paper consists of subjective questions on the specialised subject area.

The exam has failed to generate teachers in areas non-traditional subjects.
