15-day teacher training mandatory at Madras Univ

Chennai:To improve the quality of teaching in affiliated colleges, MU has decided to implement 15-day teacher training before appointing of the teachers.

A 15-day teacher training is a mandatory affair now at the university at a cost of Rs.1,000 per candidate, before giving the approval.

'From being students to college teachers, they are not exposed to the practicality of teaching. Despite of knowing their subject matter well they lack the basics of teaching,' said the Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam.

'The training would enable the teachers to use new teaching methods and updated technology,' he added.

In a meeting of affiliated college principals and secretaries headed by the Vice-Chancellor on October 30, this would be one of their modus-operandi.

While other issues such as dress-code guidelines (to avoid offensive slogans on T-shirts), cell phone guidelines, especially to avoid the misuse of camera phones on campuses, and mandatory participation of affiliated college teachers in the examination evaluation process to ensure timely publication of results will also figure out in their discussion.

All the affiliated colleges will also be asked to put forth their idea upon the introduction of new courses and preparation of need-based syllabi. Dr. Thiruvasagam also asked the colleges to participate in the university's free education proposal for underprivileged students.

He said, 'The announcement has already been made in the 68 universities to include one student in each department at least. Though I cannot force them, but I am sure they will comply by giving 10 seats each.'
