Chennai: Measure to avoid students wearing dresses with offensive slogans, the University of Madras has decided to frame a set of guidelines for a dress code for students.

Vice-chancellor, Dr G. Thiruvasagam said he had seen many students wear offensive and unwanted slogans on their T-shirts. In an attempt to make them realise how it affects others psychologically, the university has decided to convene a meeting of principals, students and staff of the varsity and its affiliated colleges.

'I want to discuss the matter with the stakeholders and decide as we cannot suddenly jump to any conclusion. We will be coming out with a set of guidelines for students to follow. It will be a request to the students, not an order,' the university’s 42nd vice-chancellor said.

Regarding banning cell phones, as done by Anna University a couple of years ago, Dr Thiruvasagam said usage of cell phone was inevitable in the modern era. 'I request students not to use cell phones in class but they can use it after the class gets over. But imposing a blanket ban is not possible as now it has become an integral part of our life,' he added.

Pointing out that there were complaints about the functioning of the university's controller of examination office, the VC said the university would be fixing surveillance cameras in various campuses to avoid corruption and unwanted persons in the university.

He said the university would be signing a memorandum of understanding with Swine University of Technology in Australia for including aircraft-related courses in the university and its affiliated colleges.
