Bhubaneswar: The state government today termed as 'illegal' Orissa Private Engineering College Association (OPECA)'s bid to conduct a common entrance test (CET) to fill up vacant seats under B Tech and MCA courses.
'We have already informed the Orissa High Court regarding the state government's views on conduct of CET by the OPECA. It is illegal to conduct another test above JEE', Industries secretary Sourav Garg said.
The state maintained that it recommended only JEE for filling up seats in private engineering colleges, he said. OPECA in public advertisements invited application from candidates to appear in the CET proposed to be held on October 25. The CET was being conducted to fill up vacant seats in different private engineering colleges, said OPECA secretary Binod Dash.
Apparently due to recession and squeeze on jobs in the IT sector, about 9,000 seats under B Tech and MCA remained vacant in different engineering colleges this time.
The remaining seats were filled up according to the merit list of the JEE (joint entrance examination), sources
