Universities in West Bengal are considering taking a more pro-active stance after three incidents of ragging have been reported in state universities over the past two months.
The statistic is the highest reported number of ragging cases in the past few years. Two of the three cases took place outside Kolkata.
VCs now say that forming anti-ragging committees is not enough and that teachers and the administration should be actively involved in raising awareness about ragging being a crime. WBUT will also be taking stricter action against students in the private-affiliated engineering colleges under it.
All three incidents took place on campuses that have hostel facilities. A student at Calcutta Institute of Pharmaceutical & Applied Health Sciences committed suicide earlier this month after being ragged by seniors. Seniors at Haldia Institute of Technology took a boy to the hostels and beat him up for wearing headphones in college. In September, five seniors at Jadavpur University reportedly ragged four juniors at the college hostel. All five seniors were found guilty, four were suspended and one was expelled from the hostel.
Jadavpur University has taken strong action against ragging so far. Three students were suspended for ragging this year. The students will not be allowed to study at JU again.
