Madurai: Alienation from parents and nuclear living have become a common practice among the children. Till now, parents could do nothing but sigh. Keeping in mind the growing trend among the youngsters to desert their parents and retaliate, the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) has decided to introduce a postgraduate degree in parenting through distance education.

With a hope to lessen such unwanted conflicts between the children and their parents and to make the parents equipped with the subtleties and nuances of parenting, the university has come up with this novel course.

The course will cover a wide range of subjects starting from familial relationships and child psychology to separation and even divorce laws.

According to MKU vice chancellor R Karpaga Kumaravel he was inspired to introduce such a programme after his recent visit to the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He further added that the course intends to check the rising cases of divorces and separations in the country.

Sociologists have welcomed such a decision pointing out that it is the need of the hour to protect the society from this widespread angst among the children and the parents. Moreover, the experts believe that parenting requires some form of expertise and this course is expected to help the cause.

The programme is expected to start in around six months. The willing candidates need to have an undergraduate degree to be eligible for the course. Age is no bar.
