Single Entrance Test for Medical and Engineering Courses Proposed by Government

Updated on: Friday, August 21, 2015

AICTEGovernment proposed a single entrance test for all the Engineering and Management institutes under AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education), so that no need for the students to appear for multiple-entrance examinations for admissions to different institutes.

At present there are over 11,000 engineering and management institutes, that come under the AICTE. JEE Main is being conducted for engineering and CMAT is being conducted for Management, the results of these exams shall be used by all institutions, whether run by deemed universities, universities, private universities, state government-run universities.

There's a suggestion that has been made is that the seats which are vacant after the completion of counselling, will not be considered as a management quota, but to be used to admit students on the waiting list.

Kapil Sibal, who was presiding the HR Ministry two years back, had also made similar proposals of having a similar national testing agency to conduct various kinds of national level entrance examinations and a task force was also constituted to execute the proposal forward.

This decision has been taken because currently students have to appear for various different entrance exams for admission into AICTE affiliated institutes. Different states, private universities and institutes have their own entrance tests for the same kind of course, making it easy for the students.
