Karnataka allocates land for IIT

iit Mysuru might lose the opportunity to be the place for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) proposed by central government in Karnataka, since the allocated land is 1 acre less than the guidelines of central government.

An official of the ministry of human resources development's Site Selection Committee said, Mysuru has allocated 499 acres but according to the guidelines of central government it must have 500 acres.

According to proposal sent to central government's HRD ministry from Karnataka state 688 acres have been identified in Raichur while in Dharwad 500-600 acres free of legal encumbrances have been identified. If the 500-acre rule is applied, these two cities will have a better chance.

IIT-Goa missed one year as state government dithers on land.

The MHRD official pointed out that the "allocation of the land for setting up the IIT is based on the recommendation of the SSC. This committee will visit Karnataka state and decide the land for IIT by the end of this month and, 500 acres is a compulsory ."

IITs in eight cities - Jodhpur,Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar,Patna, Mandi , Gandhinagar, Ropar, and Indore- are all in temporary campuses as the respective state governments have not been able to hand over the required land,of 500 acres the official said, hinting that the Centre may not want the same situation in Karnataka. "These temporary IIT were during the 11th Plan period but are yet to move to permanent campuses." the official said.

Karnataka took nearly six months for land allocation to IIT in the state to identify legal issue-free land, and the state is hoping that work on the campus will start soon.
