Maharashtra students achieves top 3 ranks in JEE Main

When the CBSE announced the JEE Main ranks on Wednesday, it proved to be a good day for Maharashtra. All the top three rankers of JEE Main ranks are from the state. Pune candiate Sankalp Gaur is, followed by Tanuj Kaza from Mumbai and Giridhar S, too from Pune.

Gaur, who had scored 345 marks out of 360 in the exam, got 97.80% in his CBSE Class XII boards. He said "It was a surprise to find I had topped the all-India rank. I had the marks in JEE, but wasn't sure if I would top the country as the Class XII marks have also been considered," . Gaur will opt for electrical engineering in IIT-Bombay, but his aim is to pursue pure physics.

Kaza, a student of PACE Junior Science College, Andheri, got 335 in Main and 95.85% in HSC. He said his feat of ranking second "least expected". Giridhar S, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pune, scored 321 in JEE Main ranks and got 98% in CBSE. He plans to choose computer science and engineering at IIT-Bombay. The fourth and fifth JEE Main ranks , Sheshansh Agrawal and Divyansh Pareek, are from Jaipur.Because of the inclusion of Class XII scores, the JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks of the top rankers are at wide variance, including the top 5 (except Pareek).

The top 20 JEE Main ranks (again, except Pareek) were outside this slot in Advanced. Satvat Jagwani, who secured the first position in Advanced, got a JEE Main ranks of 740 on Wednesday. In the other hand, Gaur, the Main topper, was 56th on the Advanced merit list. Kaza, second in Main, was 45th in Advanced. Giridhar, third in Main, was 84th in Advanced. There were small difference in their JEE Main test scores and most secured above 90% in their respective boards. Purav Gandhi, who was Mumbai topper in Advanced, with an all-India ranks of 29, has seen his Main ranks drop down to 103. It doesn't matter to him, though, as he will anyway get into IIT-Bombay, his first choice.

Many students alleged that the difference came about when the cumulative scores were normalized. A few CBSE students have said that their revised scores after reevaluation were not considered for calculating the final JEE ranks. A student alleged her board exam score was revised from 478 out of 500 to 485. "A friend who scored 97% in the boards got 99.82 percentile in JEE Main, while I got 98.93 percentile despite scoring the same (97%), after revision," she said.
