Getting a US degree becomes Easier

Indian students looking to earn US degree can now avail of the 2+2 programme provided by the American Honours Network. The network consists of both community colleges and universities. Students wanting to study in the US through the American Honours Network programme have to first do a two-year degree programme from a community college. After this, they can pick a university of their choice from the network itself. "Initially, a student gets conditional admission to the university. On scoring the required grades in the community college, he can join a university of his choice from our network," said David Finegold, chief academic officer of American Honours on Wednesday.

The programme not only makes studying US degree less expensive but also allows students to get a hang of the American education system before stepping into a university. It also offers additional training of three months for students to learn English and attain proficiency skills. Pierce College, Washington; Navarro College, Texas, Mercer County Community College, New Jersey; Kackson College, Michigan are some of the community colleges in the network. Among the listed universities are University of California, Berkeley, Purdue University, George Mason University, University of North Carolina, Occidental College, Stanford University and others.

"Studying US degree costs about $75,000 annually for four years. A community college, on the other hand, would cost about $20,000, including food and accommodation. Usually, students are given a work visa for only a year. However, after community college, students get a year's work visa, after which they can do their university degree, work for another year and then go for masters," said Finegold.
