Madurai: To create awareness among researchers of patent filing process, the Madurai Kamaraj University has initiated steps to activate its Patent Information Cell.

A nodal officer had been designated for the purpose and the formal inauguration of the cell would take place soon, R. Karapaga Kumaravel, Vice-Chancellor, said on Tuesday.
Following a suggestion made by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology asking various universities to take a lead in filing of patents the university has set up the cell.

R. Ramaraj, Professor in School of Chemistry, has been appointed as the nodal officer for the cell. 'We are in touch with the TN State Council for Science and Technology on how to implement patent-related activities. A one-day workshop is being planned by the MKU,' Prof. Ramaraj said.

He said that the cell would guide the faculty members and research staff to think on the lines of how to file a patent for their findings and not to just confine to publications alone.

The Member-Secretary of Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, S. Vincent, when contacted, said that the council would arrange for resource persons from the Patent Office in Chennai to help the MKU faculty in the process of filing patents.

'Our objective is to encourage more patents on behalf of the universities. The council would periodically interact with researchers at MKU,' Dr. Vincent said
