To improve the literacy level - steps taken by Pranab Mukharjee

President of India Pranab Mukharjee on Sunday said that India’s Endeavour should be to bring its literacy rate upto match.  But only the world average but touch the levesl attained by the leading nations.  He added that this is the time to take vigorous efforts to improve literacy rate.  The president said that by the end of 12th  plan. We would achieve 80% literacy and also narrow the gender gap from 16 to 10 percentage3 points.  He said that India’s literacy rate should par with that of the world.  He appreciated the steps taken so far, to achieves four fold increase the literacy level from 18%.  In 1951 to 74% in 2011.  He said to reduce the gender disparity more attention has to be given to the girl child and women.  Besides he added efforts has to be taken to alleviate poverty, mitigating inequality and owing access to schooling at all level , say, national, state, district block and gram panchayat.

Literacy is the basic human necessity and corner stone for all categories, he said.
