Marine courses can provide salary upto 5 Lakhs per month says Narassiah, an expert with 30 years of experience in the field of Marine.

Dinamalar Tamil Daily in association with SRM University hosts 'Vazhikatti' education programme for students in Madurai, addressing on the topic, 'Opportunities for students of Marine studies' Narassiah spoke:

This field has numerous opportunities. Studying Marine courses would obtain jobs like driving the ship, engineering and assistants in the ship. Nautical science students can join as helmsman. After completing Marine engineering studies can work as engineers, chief engineer in the ship.

But, hard work is the basic prerequisite. Chief engineers in the ship obtain salary around 5 lakhs a month. After working for few years in the ship the person can join a company or work independently. After working in the ship they obtain experiences capable enough to work in every other fields.

To take up nautical science, marine engineering should have scored good marks in plus two subjects like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. It is obligatory to pass a medical test and in particular must not have problem of the eye. This being a four-year course should have to complete three years studies in college and then later should work in the ship for one year. Students are selected according to their excellency.

Presently, job opportunities have come down in the field of Communication (IT). However, the field of Marine provides job opportunities at all times. India stands third in the usage of sea route for transporting Iron and other materials.

In the year 2003-2004, ships transported materials weighing 344 million ton and in 2006 – 2007 goods weighing 463.84 million tons were transported through ships.

In 1971, Indian had only 255 ships and the number rose to 514 in 2000. Presently, in India there are 850 ships.

Foreign organizations consider that Indians are highly intelligent. Shipping companies of other nation select many Indians to work in their organisation.

Woman also can join this course. 50% fees concession are offered to woman. Small ships are set to sail in big rivers like Ganges, Bramaputhra. Hence, this field provides job opportunities always, Narassaiah said.
