Four students of MNIT Jaipur have designed and put together a portable PramBag

Four students of Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, have designed and put together a portable PramBag which is set to change the conventional picture of the pram used only by the elite.

Shubham Maheshwari, a final year mechanical engineering student, who worked on the design, said, "PramBag has been designed to cater to the needs of an urban parent who frequently travels with his baby in unfavourable surroundings, viz., railway/metro station, crowded walkways, and shopping malls. The idea was to merge a backpack, in which the baby can be carried, with a pram and making the transition quick and smooth." The team comprising Elvis Sajan, Ankur Kumar, Sabyasachi Ghosh and Shubham researched exhaustively on 100 years of pram history, re-designed the product thrice and have now finally applied for a patent.

Elaborating on the design, Shubham said, "The features in the PramBag will allow parents to travel with their baby hands-free even in crowded places. Also, it allows easy conversion (without requiring external support) into a pram when travelling in an open area while maintaining the same level of comfort and safety for the child as well as the parent." The product's weight is also significantly lighter as compared to an ordinary pram, he said.

In addition, PramBag allows parents to keep their baby close to them at all times. While commuting in a car, the PramBag can be conveniently converted into a bed for the baby.

"A detachable wheelbase makes the product even lighter. A working prototype has a folding and locking mechanism, making it easily convertible into a backpack. A detailed 3D sketch (virtual prototype) of the model has been made in Auto Desk Inventor software along with a miniature model made in plastic," said Shubham.

The working prototype performs all the functions while maintaining the required safety standards. Various stress tests performed on the 3D model show that it can withstand most external forces. The miniature prototype validated the functioning of the folding and locking mechanism.

"The product has novelty and as per our research there is no such product available so far. The patent procedure has been started and soon it will be launched in the market at affordable prices," said professor Harlal Mali, co-ordinator of the project.
