MBA and MCA colleges in Gujarat have no applicants

For several colleges in the state that offer MBA and MCA courses the future does not seem to be bright. Of the 289 colleges in Gujarat, no fewer than 32 are such where not even a single student has applied. This will mean huge, empty classrooms.

Sources in the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) revealed that of the 20,810 seats available, only 7,153 have been filled and 13,657 are empty. "This means that only 41% of the total available seats have been filled," said an ACPC source.

But even in the MBA/MCA colleges which have been "blessed with" some applicants, 79 colleges have only 10 applicants each while 91 each have only 20 seats filled.

The second round of admissions in MBA and MCA courses which was completed recently has thrown up some more bad news. In MBA courses, of the total 124 colleges, 30 are such which have filled up their seats; while in MCA of the total 84 colleges, for semester I, only 16 colleges can boast of 100 per cent seat occupancy.

For third semester of MCA, of the 81 colleges, 47 have all seats filled. "Here the situation is a little better because of a rule introduced by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) which says that students who have completed BSc in maths or statistics or BCA can get admission in the third semester of MCA directly," said a state education department official.

UV Shah, the official on special duty of ACPC, said: "In all, 4,050 seats have been filled in the MBA stream, 1,261 in MCA semester 1, and 1,842 seats in MCA semester 3. The vacant seats in MBA courses are 6,587; in MCA semester I, the number is 4,923; and in MCA III, it is 2,147."
