Tharoor hinted on the possibility of setting up an institute of national standing in Coimbatore

Minister of state for human resource development, Shashi Tharoor, who was in town spoke about the possibility of setting up an institute of national standing in this city.

Speaking with media in the function at Karunya University he said, Research and Innovation Bill, introduced in May 2012, which would allows to set up such an university, is pending with the parliamentary standing committee. Tharoor assured that once the bill was passed, a university would be set up in the city, but he refused to commit to when it would happen.

The bill includes 14 universities. However the standing committee had raised some objections. "The committee had suggested that instead of considering the 14 universities together, each should be discussed separately. The bill may be revised along these lines and sent to the cabinet committee and law ministry," Tharoor said.

He said UPA would do its best to pass the bill before its teunure.

Tharoor's statements have raised objections from political parties who have been demanding a central government institute in the region.
