HC directs IMU not to admit students

Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed Indian Maritime University not to admit students to institutions affiliated to it for the August 2009 batch .

High Court has directed Indian Maritime University not to enroll students for the one-year diploma course in Nautical Science course, who had not qualified through the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by the university.

The four week interim injunction was issued by Justice P.Jyothimani on a petition filed by the Maritime Institutes Association, which alleged irregularities in the admission process adopted by IMU for the August 2009 batch.

Submitting that IMU was established by an Act of Parliament on Nov 14 last, the petitioner contended that the University held a CET on June 21 last and declared the results on June 27. Prior to its establishment,the Indira Gandhi National Open University conducted CET for admission to the diploma course in Nautical Science which leads to BSc (Nautical science).

The association claimed that as on September 1, there were many vacancies in several institutes and many students who had qualified in the CET had not been included in the counselling. Though counselling was scheduled to be held between July 8 and 15 last, it was suddenly stopped in the evening of July 12 for 'unknown reasons.'

On July 17, IMU published guidelines for admission of the 1500 students who had undergone counselling to IMU constituted as well as affiliated institutes and colleges, the association said adding that another 2018 students were still awaiting counselling.

The association submitted that some students who had been counselled were admitted to courses commencing from February 2010 though there were vacant seats for the August 2009 batch.

It contended that at the time of transfer of the course from IGNOU to IMU, there were 24 institutes in India conducting the courses for many years. The number was raised to 26 with the addition of 'Cosmopolitan Technology of Maritime, Chennai, and Indian Maritime University Kolkatta.

However, the list of affiliated institutes shown by IMU during counselling was only 18, leaving out some reputed institutes, the association contended.
