Jabalpur: Madhya Pradesh High Court today directed the state's striking teachers and non-teaching staff of government colleges and universities, who are demanding higher wages, to resume duties from the next working day.

The directives were issued by the division bench of Justice Deepak Mishra and Justice R K Gupta following a petition filed by a B Com first year student Rupesh Kumar Singh of Jabalpur's GS College.

The petitioner contended though the teaching and non-teaching staff have a right to launch an agitation, they are not supposed to stop their work as it affects the future of students.

The teaching and non-teaching staff of government colleges and universities are on strike since September 5 (Teacher's Day) in Madhya Pradesh demanding implementation of the University Grants Commission pay scales.

The bench also directed the State Chief Secretary to ensure compliance of the court's order.
