Punjab to exempt Adarsh schools from taxes

Chandigarh: Punjab Government has decided in principle to give exemption of various taxes to the upcoming around 100 Adarsh Schools in the state. A decision to this effect has been taken in a meeting of Punjab Education Development Board chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today, an official spokesman said.

The board also gave its nod to the draft agreement and the lease deed for the approved Adarsh Schools. It was also decided in the meeting, in case the company failed to run the school as per the terms and conditions of the agreement then the board would automatically take over the control of the school.

In case the government is unable to discharge its obligation, the private management would take over the school with a condition to charge fee from 75 per cent students and impart education free of cost to remaining 25 per cent.

Taking part in the deliberations, the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal suggested to enhance the admission capacity from 1000 to 1200 seats.

He was also of the view that if any company intended to further enhance the admission capacity up to 2000 seats, he said it could be implemented as a second module with the provision of extra space without altering the original design and site plan to give it a uniform look.

On the pattern of Adarsh Schools, he asked the Board to chalk out a plan to allot sites already identified by the state government to the interested companies for setting up new primary schools in Public Private Partnership mode.

Sukhbir also asked to invite expression of interest from the companies through advertisements in this regard and these sites should be allotted on first cum first serve basis.It was also decided in the meeting that to give free hand  o the school managements of the companies, the guidelines for his would be decided by the board.
