In a decision that is set to have far reaching ramifications, Saurashtra University (SU) has announced that students passing standard XII can now pursue any stream at undergraduate level irrespective of the subjects that he or she studied from standard XI onwards. A decision in this regard was taken by academic council of Saurashtra University on Thursday.

Now, the students who pursued arts or commerce till standard XII can pursue a graduate course in sciences and law also and vice-versa. Till now, a student had to pursue only those subjects till graduation that he or she had opted for in standard XII.

Dr Girish Bhimani, member of the academic council and dean of faculty of science at the university, said, "This was the need of the hour and this practice is prevalent in western countries where students can opt for any stream irrespective of their past academic preferences. This will help students decide their career after passing standard XII."

Bhimani said a student may want to change his subjects and opt for a different career after pursuing an altogether different stream for two years. Till now the doors that were closed for such students have been opened, he said.

Every year about 75,000 students enroll in various undergraduate courses at the university.
