In its second academic year, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati will be introducing new courses in masters in arts, and MPhil and PhD programmes.

Last year, TISS had introduced an integrated bachelors (BA) programme in social sciences and two post-graduation programmes in social work and ecology, environment and sustainable development. The institute also plans to introduce joint research programmes with Assam Engineering College, based on Jawaharlal Nehru University's programmes.

"The five-year integrated master's programme comprises three-year graduation and two-year post-graduation in social sciences. The campus in dedicated to the northeast and 66 per cent seats are reserved for students from the region. The remaining 34 per cent seats are for students from other states of the country. Tuition fee is waived for scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) students with low family income. Their hostel, food and other expenses are met by the institute," said professor and TISS director S Parasuraman.

"We want to provide more opportunities to the students from the NE and we want to make sure that education is available and accessible for all. As far as placement is concerned, we will be working with the government, NGOs, government institutions and organizations. TISS will organize campus recruitments in February-March next year for the first batch of students graduating with postgraduate degrees in 2014. All graduating students will have jobs before convocation. The onus will be education for education's sake," added Parasuraman.

Representatives from TISS met chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday where issues related to environment and eco system was taken up.
