Updated on: Monday, June 03, 2013

Two new doctoral programme and one post graduation course would be introduced at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) from this academic year.

According to university sources, the two new doctoral programmes - integrated PhD and external PhD and the post graduation programme - MSc Molecular Plant Breeding are the various three new courses to be introduced this year by the university.

Considering the vast transition in the field of genomics and genetic enhancement in crop varieties, the university is introducing a new master’s programme in Molecular Plant Breeding, involving the classical plant breeding approaches with tools of genomics in public private partnership mode to equip the students in molecular works and develop their employability skills in seed industry. Students on completion of one-year course will be working at the university and latter in a seed company for thesis research.

The integrated PhD programme would be a four-year research programme, which integrates a traditional three-year PhD thesis with one-year of coursework, comprising generic research training and discipline-specific research content into a single degree. The candidates will be trained on exciting live projects to emerge as research ready scientists/engineers for taking up challenging positions.

The integrated PhD is therefore ideal for applicants who aspire to graduate with a PhD on completion of under graduate degree program. Students who are admitted to the course can obtain their PhD degree in 4 years after graduation instead of 5 years. The programme will be implemented in Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Agricultural Entomology and Agricultural Microbiology from this academic year.

Likewise for the external Ph.D. by research, candidates with master’s degree from any State agricultural university either in India or abroad can register under a research supervisor approved by TNAU in any one of the 26 disciplines. Only, candidates with professional experience of two years in government or private organization are alone eligible to apply.

In addition, the university has also invited applications from eligible candidates for admission to Masters in 39 disciplines, regular PhD in 26 disciplines, integrated PhD in 4 disciplines and external PhD by research in 26 disciplines for 2013-14 academic year.

The programmes are offered at the university as well as through constituent colleges at Coimbatore, Madurai, Killikulam, Periyakulam and Mettupalayam.

The application form can be downloaded from university website www.tnau.ac.in and candidates have to fill the application and send the hard copy by post along with all enclosures and application fee as DD (Rs 1000 per subject and Rs 500 per subject for SC/ST) to Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies, TNAU.

Separate application fee has to be sent for each subject.

Last date for receipt of the applications is June 29 for masters and July 22 for doctoral programmes.
