M Rajaram took charge on Monday as the first full-time vice-chancellor of Anna University after it became a unitary university last year. He was earlier vice-chancellor of the Anna University of Technology, Tirunelveli.

Addressing reporters, he vowed to take the advice of the university's academic council, syndicate and faculty members to ensure efficient functioning. "Starting this year I will make efforts to ensure employment for all engineering graduates. This will ensure no seat in engineering colleges goes vacant," Rajaram said.

As many as two lakh seats have been made available for engineering admissions through single window counselling this year. However, the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions committee, which co-ordinates the process, has received only 1.89 lakh applications. Rajaram hopes to turn this situation around.

He said faculty development programmes would be prepared to act as refreshers for teachers in all engineering colleges. They will incorporate the latest technology and will be held in the regional centres, Rajaram said. Efforts would be made to improve faculty-student interaction, and ensure transparent and efficient administration of the university. "I will keep the chief minister's Vision 2020 in mind to make Anna University, which has 550 affiliated colleges, a top technical institution," Rajaram added.

Rajaram was head of the EEE department at the Government College of Technology in Coimbatore before being named Anna University vice-chancellor.
