AMU to launch a 15-day drive to weed out unauthorised occupants from all hostels

Aligarh Muslim University will launch a 15-day drive to weed out unauthorised occupants from all hostels who are "frequently involved in mischief mongering at the campus".

Addressing newspersons on the occasion of completing one year at AMU, Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen (ret) Zameer Uddin Shah said the drive will start from July 1.

"In future, if any hostel inmate is found with unauthorised occupant in his room, he will have to pay a stringent price," said the former Army officer.

Shah said that his entire first year at AMU has been focused on issues of discipline and curbing unlawful activities, but, in the forthcoming year, he will focus on issues related with the promotion of academic excellence and also inculcating a culture of sporting activities.

The Vice Chancellor said that in the weeks to come there is going to be a "major clean up drive in the University administration to stamp out corruption" in various offices of the University.

The Vice Chancellor said the HRD ministry has recently granted Rs 213 crore specifically for the new AMU centres in Malappuram in Kerala and Murshidabad in West Bengal.

Shah also made it clear that "no fund meant for the University would be diverted for the above two centres which would have their own independent funding."

Referring to the demand for restoration of minority character for AMU, Gen Shah said that he was "totally committed to this cause".

He, however, pointed out that the issue presently rests with the Supreme Court and any attempt to use pressure tactic through public display of anger on this matter "could be misconstrued by the apex court and would be counter-productive".
