Delhi University will not conduct the Common Aptitude Test for English for admission to BA English (Honours) course

Delhi University will not conduct the Common Aptitude Test for English for admission to BA English (Honours) course this year. The department of English, which conducted the test on behalf of the colleges to enrol students based on the CATE score, has decided to discontinue the entrance test for the 2013-14 admission session due to lukewarm response from colleges.

This was confirmed by the head of the English department, Sumanyu Satpathy, on Thursday. "We sent the letters to the colleges and also convened a meeting. Thirty-odd colleges came for the meeting. We were expecting at least 22 colleges to give it in writing of their interest to be a part of the CATE. But we received just nine colleges expressing their interest. So for this year, we are not conducting the test as it is not worth the trouble. It will be a waste of labour otherwise," Satpathy said.

The exam was introduced in 2010. While 17 colleges participated in the first CATE, the number increased to 25 in 2011, and 21 colleges in 2012, including colleges like Hindu, Lady Shri Ram, IP, Kirori Mal and Zakir Husain (evening).
