UPRTOU initiates development of its own Self Learning Materials for its various courses

The Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU), the sole open university of the state has embarked upon a major step towards self reliance by initiating the development of its own Self Learning Materials (SLMs) for its various popular programmes. The university has so far been using SLMs of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Vice-Chancellor of UPRTOU, Prof AK Bakhshi said, "SLM's constitute the most important element of open and distance education (ODE) wherein the quality of ODE, to a great extent, depends upon the quality of SLMs given to the students. These SLMs should be so well-written that after going through them, the student does not feel the need of a teacher. Further, these SLMs shall be written keeping in mind the background of the students." UPRTOU has its own SLMs for only a few courses currently.

For this purpose, various boards of studies in different subjects have been constituted to take a fresh look at the syllabi of different programmes and modernise them. These syllabi after approval of the respective school boards shall then go to the Academic Council of the university, informed the V-C.

Prof Bakhshi said the names of the prospective content writers for the various programmes approved by the various school boards shall also get approved by the Academic Council. UPRTOU has also prepared a SLMs manual for the prospective content writers. This manual, he said, highlights the salient features of SLMs and gives detailed guidelines for content writers and editors.
