Six papers that make up the office management and secretarial practice course are missing from the proposed syllabus for the four-year undergraduate degree programme to be introduced in Delhi University from the new academic session.
The move certainly has commerce teachers in 25 Delhi University colleges worried as their subjects will no longer be taught if this syllabus is passed. With the BCom (Honours) course of the faculty now ready, some commerce teachers are questioning the omission of the three papers on tax from the new syllabi. Besides, teachers are questioning the logic behind introducing foreign exchange when the paper on international business does not feature in the new curriculum.
The office management and secretarial practice course has been taught since 1974 and till last year 25 colleges were running it. A lot of poorer students would opt for this vocational course offered under the BA programme.
"Since the BA programme has been done away with, this course has been omitted completely though it comes under the faculty of commerce and business studies. It may have been accommodated in Discipline 2 which has six papers" said a teacher. The faculty of commerce is meeting on Thursday to place the syllabus for approval.
Meanwhile, teachers have raised serious concerns about its quality. "Defying all logic, the paper on international business has been removed and foreign exchange management has been introduced. A student who has not learnt international business is expected to learn foreign exchange management?" the letter written by associate professor, DDU College, Hem Chand Jain read.
Interestingly, many teachers invited to the faculty meeting are yet to receive the course content.
