Anna University officials conduct enquiry on a city engineering college for disallowing students to appear for exam

A team of Anna University officials conducted an inquiry on Friday at Madha Engineering College after a few students complained that they were not allowed to appear for semester examinations because they had not cleared a few papers of previous semesters.

They also complained that they were forced to sign bonds that said they would not be promoted and should not leave the institution without completing the course.

A team headed by Dr S Ganesan, director, student affairs, Anna University, and senior professors from the affiliation department and the examination wing visited the college in Somangalam near Kundrathur to investigate.

A second year student said, "The head of the department asked us to write what he wanted on a 20 stamp paper and made us sign on it."

At least 100 students are said to have been affected. Anna University in-charge P Kaliraj said, "The college administration can take disciplinary action against students and make them clear an exam, but it can neither restrict them from appearing in an exam nor detain them for not clearing a few papers."

A few students produced the copies of the signed stamp paper to the officials demanding action against the college administration. "The administration is also demanding students to pay full fees for the entire course even if we wanted to discontinue and apply for transfer certificate from the college," another student said.

"We will ensure the students are able to take their exams and they are promoted," Kaliraj said.
