The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has slapped a fine of Rs 1.80 crore on nine degree and diploma engineering colleges for deficiency in infrastructure and staff.

The GTU had conducted an exhaustive survey of the quality of staff and infrastructure in the various engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges. Total 150 colleges were found highly deficient in staff and infrastructure. These colleges were issued notices to pull up their socks and put the house in order.

The first deadline for this was January 5 after which the deadlines were extended a number of times. Finally, 60 colleges were found which had not taken any serious measures to fulfill the basic requirements of infrastructure and staff.

Twenty-six colleges were summoned for final hearing by the GTU of which 22 have sent their representatives for hearing.

The nine colleges have been collectively fined Rs 1.80 crore. The colleges have also been given time till May 31 to recruit staff which is the biggest deficiency in all these colleges.
