Noting some private schools were charging "exorbitant" fees, Punjab Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka said the state government has decided to rationalise the fee structure to provide relief to concerned parents.

Necessary guidelines would be issued soon in this regard, he said.

"It is noticed some private schools are charging exorbitant fees and it has been decided to streamline the fee structure of such institutions by issuing necessary guidelines in this regard," the minister said.

The state government had also decided in principle to merge all those schools having less than 20 students with the nearest schools.

He said the education department would also provide transport facility, if needed.

On different admission policies being followed by the private schools, Maluka there was need to bring uniformity in this regard.

Regarding complaints of under-payment to teachers of the private schools, he said the state government would soon chalk out a plan under which all such payments would be made through cheques.

All schools and colleges had been directed to implement the post-matric scholarship scheme for students belonging to the scheduled castes in a stipulated time-frame, the minister said.

Month-long summer vacations for schools would start from June 10, he said.
