Not many unrecognized schools register for recognition

Updated on: Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Only 113 unrecognized schools registered for recognition between April 4 and evening of April 15 — the last date. On April 4, the Directorate of Education (DoE) issued a public circular extending the deadline for registration to April 15 and asked all unrecognized schools to furnish details of infrastructure.

Of the 113, 35 are pre-primary and, therefore, are not affected; 65 are primary and 13, middle schools. The minimum land a school must cover to be eligible for recognition was reduced from 800 square meters toabout 166 sq metres in March. The deadline for implementation of RTE Act was March 31, after which unrecognized schools were to close.

Some school associations had estimated there were as many as 700—750 un-recognized schools functioning on grounds smaller than 200 square yards and held protests for a further relaxation in and norms.
