The Physics Department of National College organised a one-day workshop on ‘Total Solar Eclipse 2009’ recently, with sponsorship from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology and the National Council for Science and Technology Communication.

Over 120 students from various colleges learnt about various aspects of astronomy and solar eclipse from S. Parthasarathy, Scientific Officer, IGCAR, Kalpakkam; Kamal Lodaya, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai; S.S. Sarrvesh, Member, Tamil Nadu Astronomy Association; P. Duraisamy, lecturer, Thiruvalluvar Government Arts College, Rasipuram, and P.S. Joseph, principal, Chidambaram Pillai Women’s College.

All India Radio recorded the group discussion for broadcasting it in ‘Ilaya Bharatham’ programme. The Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, T. Nallathambi, inaugurated the workshop. K. Sivasami, Assistant Director, Tamil Development Department, delivered the valedictory address.

The first-year classes of M.A.R. College of Engineering and Technology, Viralimalai, was inaugurated on September 3.

The chief guest, N. Siva, Rajya Sabha, MP, said the discipline students learn during education will stand them in good stead to build up personality and ensure themselves a good future.

College founder and chairman A. Mohamed Yunus said development of virtues and skills was the first step to success.

An AICTE-sponsored staff development programme on ‘Emerging Global Research in Phytomedicine’ was conducted by the Department of Pharmacognosy of Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences for Girls recently.

The programme encompassed lectures, discussions and question-answer sessions handled by eminent personalities from academia and industry. Visits to various pharma industries were also arranged to enable participants gain first-hand-information on herbal medicine.

Principal R. Senthamarai convened the programme in which 30 delegates from pharma institutions, industries and research organisations took part. G. Gajendran, Professor and Head, Department of Crop Protection, Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Tiruchi, inaugurated the programme. P.M. Mansure, principal, MIET Arts and Science College and Syndicate Member, Bharathidasan University, delivered the valedictory address.

The activities of the Hotel Management Association of the Department of Hotel Management, Jamal Mohamed College, were inaugurated recently by college secretary M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor.

S.M.I. Mohamed Ismail, managing director of Femina Group of Hotels, the chief guest for the function, spoke of the growth of hospitality and tourism industries in India and overseas. He explained the corollary between tourism development and national revenue.

. Presiding over, principal M. Sheik Mohamed said students must be hard working, interested and self-motivated to learn the intricacies of hospitality industry.

The Association of Mechanical Engineering of Shri Angalamman College of Engineering and Technology was inaugurated recently by V. Ramachandran, Assistant General Manager (Engineering), Kothari Sugars and Chemicals, Kattur unit.

Mr. Ramachandran urged the students to adopt innovative methods and strategies to excel in the competitive world.

The ECE Association was inaugurated recently by Assistant Brand Manager, Henkel India Private Limited, Chennai, and alumnus of the college, M. Vijay. He said that beside academics, students should develop their talents in other fields. He urged the students to work hard to achieve their goals. College director D. Rajaraman, principal W. Christraj and the Head of ECE Department, S. Suganthi, spoke.

Jamal Mohammed College emerged the Bharathidasan University badminton champion. It defeated JJ College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, in the final. Jamal Mohammed College was represented by Mohamed Irsath, Nilesh, G. Anbu Selvan and A. Ashraf Ali. Seventeen college teams participated in the tournament.

According to the Director of Physical Education of the college, B.S. Sha-in-sha, the win was a reward for the players’ consistency and hard work. College secretary and correspondent M.J.M. Abdul Gafoor, assistant secretary A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, treasurer K.A. Khaleel Ahamed and principal M. Sheik Mohamed commended the victorious team members.

The General Manager, Operations (Boiler Shops), BHEL, Tiruchi complex, S. Gopinath, was the chief guest for the inauguration of the first-year classes at MIET Polytechnic College. In his address, he said that youngsters should believe in their abilities and work hard to achieve success. Mr. Gopinath called upon the students to develop team spirit.

The chairman, MIET Institutions, A. Mohamed Yunus, presided over the function. He urged the students to make use of the opportunities available at the college. College principal S. Mathiyazhagan spoke.

The first-year MBA, MCA and ME classes at J. J. College of Engineering and Technology were inaugurated recently. The director, Centre for Human Renaissance, Chennai, Jafar Ali, was the chief guest. He urged the students to aim higher and equip themselves with multiple talents to achieve success in their future endeavours. Students must be flexible to accept the changes occurring in the current job market. The students should also concentrate on improving their presentation skills, he said.

V. Sivaramakrishnan, principal, JJCET, in his keynote address, emphasised the new entrants to do SWOT analysis and thereby finalise their goals towards achievement. K. Priya, vice-chairperson of the J. J. Group of Institutions, presided. K. Abdullah Basha, Advisor (MBA and MCA), offered felicitations.
