MBA (executive) degree to be discontinued from the new academic session in 2013 at PU

In what indicates a further downfall in the dwindling standards of University Business School (UBS) at Panjab University, MBA (executive) degree will be discontinued from the new academic session in 2013. The syndicate took the decision in its meeting on Tuesday.

The course meant for working professionals in management and corporate field, which has 39 seats currently, is being scrapped citing reasons such as faculty crunch and decline in students' interest.

Despite sufficient number of seats, barely one fourth of the seats occupied currently. PU officials revealed that out of 49 students who appeared in the course only 17 could qualify conditions and eventually eight students were consistently attending classes in last batch.

UBS has long been a prestigious department of the university, however, until recently alumni at top positions have pointed out to the deteriorating standards of the department.

"It is unfortunate that the department is unable to run a course and is asking for its discontinuance. A management institute should know how to make its own course more popular," said a syndic, who declined to be named. Admissions for the new session will not be conducted.

The MBA (executive) course was designed to be completed in three semesters and only those with two years of full time executive experience in a commercial or industrial establishment were eligible to apply. This was in addition to clearing an entrance exam for the admission to the course.

Even members of all India or state administrative, technical services and defence personnel holding administrative posts with not less than two years executive experience were eligible for the course and organizational sponsorship was essential.
