The proposal of giving autonomy to KJ Somaiya Engineering College was passed by the academic council of Mumbai University on Tuesday. This is the fourth institution under the Somaiya group to have attained the status.

The council instituted three new courses in engineering. "The university has decided to institute BE in fire engineering, material technology and water source engineering," said the dean of technology, Suresh Ukrande. It also decided to form a separate faculty for management studies. Currently, management studies' academic decisions come under the arts faculty.
