Playing loud and "improper music" at schools in Punjab during functions is set to be banned, with state government today asking schools to comply with the directive.

The state government has directed school authorities to ensure that farewell functions being organised in High and Senior Secondary Schools in the state "should be strictly according to our rich cultural values" and categorically made it clear that "there would be zero tolerance for playing any improper music".

K S Pannu, Secretary-cum-Director General Education said that it has come to his notice that during such 'farewell parties', "contrary to our cultural traditions, loud and improper music was being played which not only vitiates the school atmosphere but also affects badly the young minds."

He directed District Education Officers (Schools), District Education Officers and other inspection teams to check such practice, wherever it is detected.

Pannu said that to keep the sanctity of our education institutes, "it is our duty to ensure that these programmes should be strictly according to our cultural traditions," according to a state government press release here.

Notably, voices have been raised by several social groups against playing of "vulgar songs" at social and cultural events.
