The government said it is keen on facilitating industry-institute collaboration for the higher education sector in keeping with the recommendations of a committee headed by Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy.

HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju said at a function, "The recommendations by the committee to set up a council for industry and higher education collaboration to facilitate industry-institute collaboration is indeed the way forward and we are trying to take this initiative forward."

Noting that corporate sector can play a pivotal role in improving the country's prevailing higher education system, he said corporates can collaborate with the academia in several ways with varying funding commitments.

They could range from direct ownership and management of institutions to collaborating with higher education institutions and research faculty development.

The minister's comments came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh flagged concern over the quality of education in the country.

He also regretted that none of the Indian universities figures among the top 200 in the world and that the focus henceforth would be on giving "over-riding emphasis on quality".
